I have successfully installed ADE 2.0.1 on a fresh installation of Ubuntu 18.04. If you’re still reading this far I can only assume that you need to get this installed as well. Overall it took a good few hours of searching and playing to finally arrive at a working installation of ADE 2.0.1 with Wine on Linux. The instructions there didn’t really work for me, but there were some other posts in places like the MobileRead wiki where I was able to gain some more insights as well. I spent some time researching if the application would work over at the App Database for Wine. (The actual interface for Overdrive at the library is a website.) For other purposes that I won’t go into here right now, I need to be able to use an older version of ADE. Rather, it’s use of Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) as the means for checking out books. It actually installs just fine all on it’s own in Wine so it’s a non-issue. I won’t go into using CloudLibrary, as it’s not the focus of this post. Luckily for Linux users, there’s the project to run Windows applications on various POSIX-compliant operating systems: Wine. Neither of these software solutions have a Linux option. Currently, there are mainly two big systems in place for digital library lending, Bibliotheca’s CloudLibrary and Rakuten Overdrive.Īs is often the case in modern computing, anything not Apple or Microsoft is relegated to the rubbish bin.Īs a Linux user, this is not ideal for me. The problem lies in how we can borrow and checkout digital books. I immediately ran into a bit of a disconnect between my rapidly advancing digital life and the reality of digital books. It’s like supporting net-neutrality in meatspace! Side note: Please, please, please support your local libraries. In the course of finding more books to read I did what I’ve always done for as long as I can remember: visit my local library. I picked up an Amazon Kindle Paperwhite over a year ago, and I have been tearing through books at an alarming rate. Williams has analysis from the last ten years, all available from her blog as listed below.Īs stated, it is important for ALL in the architecture profession to be aware of this data. Additionally, the percentage has remained around 2% despite NCARB data showing that all exam completions for architects has nearly doubled in that same time period.”Īs well as this insight from 2019, Ms. We have a long way to go before the number is on par with the population of the African-American population in the US currently at 14%. This number is woefully small considering that NCARB reported that a whopping 4,981 candidates completed their exams just in 2018.Īfrican American licensure numbers show steady, increase, but still hover around 2% of the approximate 115,316 total architects licensed in the US. The DAA had a total of 2,306 living African-American licensed architects at the end of 2019. Broken down by gender, the registry had 470 women and 1836 men. If we believe NCARB’S conclusion, then the new exam version seems to be greatly affecting the pass rates of this group much more than others. This 46% decrease is sharply down from 71 in 2018 and staggering compared to the 2% decrease NCARB saw. According to the Directory of African American Architects (DAA)**, 39 African-Americans were licensed in 2019. “…Likewise, the positives in the economy did not translate into an increase in the number of African-Americans that earned their architecture license. The Employees Table Let’s see what this code returns: substring_extraction The arguments say that the substring starts at the 9th character of the string and that its length is 10 characters. This means: I want to find a substring from the text ‘This is the first substring example’. SELECT SUBSTRING('This is the first substring example', 9, 10) AS substring_extraction You can write the string explicitly as an argument, like this: The SUBSTRING() function returns a substring from any string you want. Starting, of course, with the simplest one! Example 1: Substring From a String Literal Now that we have the principles covered, let me show you several examples. In the string above, the substring that starts at position 1 and has a length of three characters is ‘STR’. Therefore, SUBSTRING() extracts a substring as you specify in its argument. A substring is a string within the main string. The clue is in the function’s name itself. The length argument, as the name says, defines the length, an integer value, of the substring to be returned. The start argument is an integer indicating the numeric position of the character in the string where the substring begins. Its syntax isįor the expression argument, you write a string literal or specify a column from which you want to extract the substring. SUBSTRING() is a text function that allows you to extract characters from a string. Some examples may feel complicated if you’re not familiar with the text functions, so make sure you have the Standard SQL Functions cheat sheet or an overview of SQL text functions by your side. In this article, we have five real-life business examples that cover the main uses of this function. One of the common text functions the course covers is SUBSTRING(). It contains 211 exercises and teaches you how to use common text, numeric, and date-and-time functions in SQL. The functions that let you do so are called text functions.įor anyone who wants to practice SQL functions, I recommend our interactive Standard SQL Functions course. Not only do you have to extract it, but often you also have to manipulate it. But text is data, too! It’s very common to find text data in databases. When you think of working with data in SQL, your first thought is probably a database full of numbers and your SQL code doing very fancy calculations. This example will help us understand the public int indexOf(int char) method.Working with text data in SQL? We explain how to get values from any point in a string. In the first example below, we'll find the index of a single character in a string. str represents a substring in a string.ĭon't worry if you don't yet understand how any of this works – the examples will make it all clear! How to Use the indexOf Method in Java. With this parameter, you can tell the indexOf method where to start its operation from. This is important where you have two characters/strings that have the same value in a string. fromIndex signifies the position where the search for the index of a character or substring should begin.char represents a single character in a string.Let's explain these parameters before seeing some examples: Public int indexOf(String str, int fromIndex) Public int indexOf(int char, int fromIndex) The indexOf method has the following methods: public int indexOf(int char) We'll also look at some examples to help you understand and use them effectively to find the index of a character or substring in your Java code. In this article, we'll see the syntax for the different indexOf methods. The indexOf method returns the index position of a specified character or substring in a string. A string is a collection of characters nested in double quotes. The steps may vary based on device model and brand, but it is mostly the same. Managing environments with the ASM model is out of scope of this content.Īzure Resource Manager is the front-end service, which hosts the REST APIs used by PowerShell, the Azure portal, or other clients to manage resources. To learn more, see Azure Resource Manager vs. Prior to ARM, there was another deployment model named Azure Service Manager (ASM) or "classic". You use management features like access control, locks, and tags, to secure and organize your resources after deployment. Resource Manager provides a management layer that enables you to create, update, and delete resources in your Azure subscription. Resource Manager is the deployment and management service for Azure, it has a trust relationship with Azure AD for identity management for organizations, and the Microsoft Account (MSA) for individuals. Azure Resource Management ModelĮach Azure subscription is associated with controls used by Azure Resource Manager (ARM). Additionally, the Bicep language can be used instead of JSON. The template can be used to deploy the resources consistently and repeatedly. Resource Manager template - A JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) file that defines one or more resources to deploy to a resource group, subscription, tenant, or management group. Storage is another common resource provider. Compute, which supplies the virtual machine resource. For example, a common resource provider is Microsoft. Resource provider - A service that supplies Azure resources. Note, policy definitions can be applied to a management group or subscription. All subscriptions within a management group automatically inherit the conditions applied to the management group. You organize subscriptions into containers called "management groups" and apply your governance conditions to the management groups. It can be at the tenant root management group (highest scope) or at lower levels in the hierarchy. Management group - Azure management groups provide a hierarchical method of applying policies and compliance at different scopes above subscriptions. However, each tenant may trust multiple subscriptions and subscriptions can be moved between tenants. A subscription trusts Azure AD to authenticate users, services, and devices.Ī subscription may trust only one Azure AD tenant. An Azure subscription has a trust relationship with Azure AD. Subscription - From an organizational hierarchy perspective, a subscription is a billing and management container of resources and resource groups. This approach also provides security benefit by leaving no fragments that might be exploited. Resource groups can also be used to help with life-cycle management by deleting all resources that have the same lifespan at one time. You decide which resources belong in a resource group based on what makes the most sense for your organization. The resource group includes those resources that you want to manage as a group. Resource group - A container that holds related resources for an Azure solution such as a collection of virtual machines, associated VNets, and load balancers that require management by specific teams. Virtual machines, storage accounts, web apps, databases, and virtual networks are examples of resources. Resource - A manageable item that is available through Azure.
